IMPORTANT:
Alterations of any kind on a title voids the assignment. Liquid paper
or erasures voids the entire title and a replacement title must be
obtained from Montgomery. Alterations on any notarized document voids
that document. Writing over another letter is considered an alteration.
DOCUMENTS NECESSARY TO TRANSFER OWNERSHIP OF AN ALABAMA TITLE SOLD BY AN ALABAMA DEALER:

Bill of Sale
- Title application
- Driver’s
License number of registered owner if owner is an Alabama resident.
If the registered owner is from a State or Country other than Alabama
then the actual driver’s license is required
SALE WITH AN ALABAMA TITLE BY AN INDIVIDUAL:
- Bill of Sale
- The Alabama
title properly assigned to new owner
- If there are
two owners and their names are joined with an “and”,
both owners must be present in the County Office to sign the
title application unless one of the two has an original notarized
Power of
Attorney from
the other stating they are authorized to sign on their behalf.
If the two owner’s names are joined by an “or”,
only one owner needs to be present to complete the transaction. (If
the
two owner’s
names with no connecting “and” or “or” then
it is considered “and”.)
- The owner
signing the title application must have a valid Driver’s
License from any state or country or an ID issued from the
State of Alabama. An International Driver’s License must be
accompanied by a valid Driver’s License from the individual’s
country of origin
- Payments
done via check must be accompanied by a valid Alabama Driver’s
License. Individuals presenting an out of state Driver’s
License must pay with a credit card/debit card (MasterCard
or Visa) or cash
SALE WITH WITH AN "OUT OF STATE" TITLE OR MSO:
- Bill of Sale
- Title or
MSO properly assigned to the new owner
- The vehicle
must be present at our office for a Vehicle Identification Number
inspection or an
Inspection form completed and signed by
an Alabama Law Enforcement Officer
- If there
are two owners and their names are joined with an “and”,
both owners must be present in the County Office to sign the
title application unless one of the two has an original notarized
Power of Attorney from
the other stating they are authorized to sign on their behalf.
If the two owner’s names are joined by an “or”,
only one owner needs to be present to complete the transaction. (If
the
two owner’s

- Current Registration
- The
out of state title in the owner’s name
- The vehicle
must be present at our office for a Vehicle Identification Number
inspection
or an Inspection form completed and signed
by an Alabama Law Enforcement Officer
- If there are
two owners and their names are joined with an “and”,
both owners must be present in the County Office to sign
the title application unless one of the two has an original
notarized Power of Attorney from
the other stating they are authorized to sign on their

DOCUMENTS NECESSARY WHEN TRANSFERRING A VEHICLE THAT IS FINANCED TO ALABAMA FROM AOTHER STATE:
- Current Registration
- A faxed copy
of the existing title from the lien holder. If the lien holder will
include the owner’s phone number on the fax
the License Office will contact the owner when the paperwork
is received
- Lien holder
must provide their correct mailing address
- If the lien
holder has changed names the State requires a notarized affidavit
on their
letterhead stating that the two companies
are now one and the same
- Owner or lien
holder must provide the financed account number
- The vehicle
must be present at our office for a Vehicle Identification Number
inspection
or an Inspection form
completed and signed by an Alabama
Law Enforcement Officer

- Current Registration

title from leasing company. If the leasing company will include
lessee’s
phone number along with paperwork the License Office will notify
lessee when paperwork is received
- The lessee
must have an original notarized Power of Attorney from the leasing
company
- The vehicle
must be present at our office for a Vehicle Identification Number
inspection or an Inspection form
completed and signed by an Alabama
Law Enforcement Officer
- The person
named on the POA signing the title application must have a valid
Driver’s License
from any state or country or an ID issued from the State of Alabama.
An International Driver’s License must
be accompanied by a valid Driver’s License from
the individual’s
country of origin
- Payments done
via check must be accompanied by a valid Alabama Driver’s
License. Individuals presenting an out of state Driver’s
License must pay with a credit card/debit card (MasterCard
or Visa) or cash
DOCUMENTS NECESSARY TO TRANSFER A TAG FROM A VEHICLE THAT HAS BEEN TOTALED:
- The Bill of
Sale for the newly purchased vehicle
- The title
application or title of the newly purchased vehicle
- The Driver’s
License number of the registered owner
- A letter from
the insurance carrier identifying the totaled vehicle by model and
vehicle identification
number stating that
the vehicle has
been classified as a total loss
- If there are
two owners and their names are joined with an “and”,
both owners must be present in the County Office to sign
the title application unless one of the two has an original notarized
Power of Attorney from
the other stating they are authorized to sign on their behalf.
If the two owner’s names are joined by an “or”,
only one owner needs to be present to complete the transaction.

- The owner

ESTATE:
(No Will or Will that does not require probate)
- The original
title
- Copy of the
Death Certificate
- Next of Kin
Form (which can be obtained at any Shelby County License Office)
must be completed and notarized
- The name of
owner on title and the name on the death certificate must be exactly
the same. If not,
an affidavit (which can be
obtained at any
Shelby County License Office) must be signed and notarized
stating that individual’s name on the title and death certificate
is one and the same
(Probated Will)
- The original
title properly signed by the Executor
- Letters of
Testamentary or Letter of Administration
- Bill of Sale
if the Executor has sold the vehicle to someone else
VOUCHER/RECEIPT
FOR CREDIT INFORMATION:
The last registered
owner of a vehicle that has been sold, traded, stolen, totaled, removed
from Alabama or otherwise disposed
of must be present
and show a state issued driver’s license and an Alabama issued
ID. Documented proof verifying what happened to the vehicle must be shown
within 12 months of the date the vehicle was sold, traded, stolen, totaled,
removed from Alabama or otherwise disposed.
VOUCHER
- A voucher is
issued when the new purchase is a used vehicle and ad valorem taxes
will be
collected. It is used at the time of issuance against
whatever taxes are due on the new purchase
- A $2.00 handling
fee is charged for each transaction using a voucher
- A voucher
applies only to payment of ad valorem taxes and cannot be applied
to tag fee, transfer fee, issuance fee, penalty, interest
or
any other fees that may be collected
- A voucher can
be transferred by the registered owner to a spouse or dependent child
by completing
the form on the back
of the voucher
- A receipt for
credit will be issued for a balance of more than $2.00 after a voucher
is used
RECEIPT
FOR CREDIT
- A receipt for
credit is issued when new purchase is a new vehicle and ad valorem
taxes will
be deferred until the next renewal month
- A check will be
mailed to the last registered owner after the 20th of the following
month
- A $2.00 handling
fee is deducted from the amount of the check
