PROPERTY TAX
Property taxes are based on the fair
market value of the property and the property tax rate. The
County Property Tax Assessments Office establishes the property's
market value to determine the property tax. If you own and live on the property,

SALES TAX
Sales tax throughout Shelby County ranges
from 5 to 9 percent. The total is made up of 4 percent state tax, 1 percent
county tax, and in the incorporated areas, 1 to 4 percent city sales tax. For

Residents of Shelby County have access
to a combined collection of some 200,000 resources, including books, magazines,
cassettes, videos, puppets, equipment, maps, and pamphlets. Library cards,
free to Shelby County residents, are honored at all of the county’s library
locations; Alabaster, Calera, Chelsea, Columbiana, Harpersville, Helena, Montevallo, North
Shelby, Pelham, Vincent, Westover and Wilsonville. The Harrison Regional Library,
as part of the Library Network, has access to 29.2 million books in 18,168 libraries
worldwide.
JUST FOR SENIORS
Shelby County has many activities for its senior adults.
Activities, programs and educational classes are presented by and for seniors
at
12 locations throughout the county. Most senior centers offer a variety of
activities including: sewing, games, picnics, shopping trips, educational day
trips, exercise classes and equipment; computer instruction and guest speakers.
The Middle Alabama Agency on Aging (M4A)
offers a hot meal each weekday at six of the area senior centers (Alabaster,
Calera, Columbiana, Heardmont, Montevallo and Vincent), for participants who are
60 and older. Other services include home-delivered meals, legal assistance,
ombudsman service, caregiver respite, and assistance with independent living.
