A PATH TO THE FUTURE

October 27, 2004 - The Shelby County Comprehensive Plan: A Path to the Future, previously adopted by the Shelby County Planning Commission on September 30, 2004, was ratified by the County Commission during its October 25, 2004 meeting.  The action by the Commission solidifies The Comprehensive Plan as more than a policy document.

Communities are the fundamental building blocks of A Path to the Future, and include both communities of people and natural communities.  At the heart of this vision is the concept that a pattern of land development based on the traditional neighborhood — focused on a neighborhood center providing for the daily needs of its residents internally — solves many of the problems of growth management facing communities today, while also creating or reinforcing the “sense of place” necessary for people to truly feel connected to their community.

Copies of The Comprehensive Plan on CD will be made available to the public free of charge, but printed copies will be available on a cost basis from the Office of Development Services at the County Services Building; 1123 County Services Drive; Pelham, Alabama, as well as the Shelby County Administration Building; 200 West College Street; Columbiana, Alabama.

You can also download The Comprehensive Plan here in Adobe Acrobat (.pdf) format. If you do not have Adobe Acrobat Reader, get it here.
