Responsibilities
The Community Services Department is responsible for the following programs and services:
  • 25 Shelby County Contract Compliance and Federal Grants for Non-Profit Agencies
  • Administration of Federal and State Grants for Non-Profit Agencies
  • Cable television
  • ClasTran
  • Emergency Shelter Grant
    • Assists agencies with homeless prevention / shelter needs
  • Middle Alabama Area Agency on Aging (M4A)
  • Regional Planning Commission

Community Services also provides assistance to the following agencies:

ALABAMA COOPERATIVE EXTENSION SYSTEM
provides the latest, how to, information based on university research and practical experiences on a variety of subjects including Agriculture, Food Health, Urban Issues, Finance and many other subjects. You can reach the Shelby County Office at (205) 669-6763 or visit them at www.aces.edu.

ALABAMA FORESTRY COMMISSION
provides information to homeowners and landowners by providing forest certification, prescribed burning, firebreak construction, wildfire information and other services and information pertaining to woodland. SHELBY ARC
sponsors KIDSFIRST, an early intervention program for children (ages birth - three) with development delays and Right Jobs, a program to assist individuals with significant development delays. You can reach the Shelby Arc Office at (205) 664-9313 or online http://www.thearcofshelby.org

CLASTRAN

FAMILY CONNECTION
provides a variety of services for at-risk youth and their families. They provides temporary shelter and counseling services, outreach counseling services and an array of other services affecting today’s youth. HARRISON REGIONAL LIBRARY
provides support to county libraries, administers a Senior Outreach Program, Books-By-Mail, Computer Training, Computerized Homework Help and other services. Harrison Regional Library can be contacted at (205) 669-3910 or visit them at www.shelbycounty-al.org

DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN RESOURCES
provides a broad range of services to the citizens. Some include child adoption, child care, child welfare, financial resources management, food stamps and additional family services. HUMANE SOCIETY
provides citizens with a source for adoption of animals, surrender of animals, education regarding vaccinations and spay/neuter as well as other animal treatment issues. The Shelby County Humane Society can be reached at (205) 669-3916 or visit them at www.shelbyhumane.org

MIDDLE ALABAMA AREA AGENCY (M4A)
in coordination with the Alabama Department of Senior Services (ADSS), provides services to seniors 60+, including: coordination of transportation and nutrition to six local Senior Centers, home delivered meals and referral information concerning resources for older persons, based on the mission of the Older Americans Act. Other temporary services include homemaker services, caregiver respite, medication assistance and telephone reassurance programs. M4A also provides information and assistance, outreach and education, legal services, insurance counseling, and a nursing home/assisted living Ombudsmen Program. OWENS HOUSE, SHELBY COUNTY ADVOCACY CENTER
aides victims of child abuse through the process our society designed to deal with illegal activity. The Family Advocate Program is designed to ensure that the safety of child victims is the number one priority and that the families’ needs are being met. SAFE HOUSE
provides shelter services to women and children who have been victims of domestic violence. They provide therapeutic childcare services, play therapy and advocacy to children who have witnessed or been subjects of violence in their homes. SHELBY COUNTY RSVP
provides senior volunteers 55+ for a variety of worthwhile and stimulating volunteer opportunities throughout the community. Volunteer recognition programs reward approximately 500 deserving senior volunteers annually at a Spring Banquet and Christmas party, as a thank you for many hours of volunteer work, which Shelby County could not do without. SHELBY EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE
provides aid to clients who have had a recent crisis and need short term assistance with food, utility bills, housing, medical/dental needs and money management. Pre-natal and Parenting education are also available for teen parents. Shelby Emergency Assistance can be reached at (205) 665-1942

SHELBY COUNTY SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION DISTRICT
Provides conservation information regarding pasture planting, cross fencing, livestock water, site preparation and tree planting and other conservation related matters. Contact the Soil and Water Conservation District at (205) 669-7136 or visit them at www.swcc.state.al.us/directory/shelby.htm
