HOW TO APPLY FOR A COUNTY POSITION

All interested applicants may apply at the Shelby County Personnel Department County Administration Building, 200 West College Street, Columbiana, AL 35051.

Completed application materials must be filed with the Personnel Department in person, by fax, or by mail by the closing date specified on the position announcement. If you mail your application, please allow enough time for delivery. Applications postmarked by the deadline, but not received in the Personnel Office by the deadline will be disqualified and marked as received after the deadline. Applications and information may be obtained from the Personnel Department between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Applications are not accepted via e-mail at this time. Please give the complete and exact job title as it appears on the job announcement; answer all questions and furnish all information requested on the official Shelby County Application for Employment or Examination Form, which can be downloaded by clicking here.

You must have free Adobe Acrobat® Reader installed on your computer to view the file.  Once you download the application, you will need to print out a copy to complete.  If you don't have Acrobat Reader, click below. It's free and easy to use.

Applicants must complete the application form in full. Failure to complete the entire application may be cause for disqualification.  A resume may be attached to provide additional information but does not take the place of completing the application form.  A complete and accurate application is essential since this is the primary source used for determining your qualifications.
If you are applying for more than one job, you may use one application to apply for up to three separate positions.  If you are applying for more than three positions you must use a separate application form for the additional positions.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
The education and/or experience for each position is listed on the Position Announcements.  These are the minimum standards which all applicants must meet in order to be considered for employment.  All new hires are required to provide proof of identity and employment eligibility in order to comply with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1996.
CERTIFICATION

Vacancies are filled from the list of eligible applicants who have applied for that specific opening.  Applications of candidates not selected will be kept on file for two (2) years from the date of application.  Applicants must submit a separate application form for each position of interest.
Upon receipt of an authorized requisition from an appointing authority, the Personnel Department shall certify the names from the appropriate eligible list.  In general, all positions to be filled from the promotional and open-competitive list shall be filled by the rule of five (5), with one additional candidate for each vacancy past the first vacancy.  The department head/supervisor will select from the list of five (5) provided by the Personnel Department.  The four remaining names go back on the eligible list for consideration for future vacancies.

INTERVIEWS

Generally, interview appointments are made by the various appointing authorities or department heads and not by the Personnel Department.

PHYSICAL EXAMINATIONS/DRUG TESTING

Certain jobs require the applicant to pass a medical examination conducted a designated examination site.  This medical examination would take place after a conditional offer of employment has been made.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT DRUG SCREEN

Shelby County is committed to providing and maintaining a drug-free work environment.  After receiving a conditional offer of employment, applicants are required to pass a drug test conducted at a designated testing site.

TIPS FOR JOB SEEKERS
Don't be discouraged if you do not get a job offer the first time you apply.  Try again.  It may be a month or longer between steps in the process.  We know this seems like a long time, but we want to evaluate everyone fairly and find the best person for the job.  The more time and effort you put into reviewing the position announcement and filling out the application form the more likely you are to be successful.  On the other hand, it is usually a waste of your time to apply for jobs for which you clearly do not possess the required education, experience or other qualifications.
POSITION ANNOUNCEMENTS

The minimum period of time between posting Position Announcements and closing dates for applications will be five (5) calendar days.  The maximum period a Position Announcement will be posted shall be determined by the Personnel Department taking into consideration the positions to be filled, availability of applicants, and the geographical area of recruitment.  Positions which indicate and "open until filled" filing deadline will remain open until the Personnel Department receives a sufficient number of applications; recruitment for these positions can close at any time without notice.  Promotional Position Announcements will be posted for seven (7) days for acceptance of applications from employees in the classified service.  Position announcements are updated on Friday of each week.
